Depending on the state, this role is also called a healthcare agent, healthcare representative, or medical power of attorney. Whatever the name, it is the person doctors turn to when your parent cannot answer for themselves.
The proxy's job is not to decide what they would want, but to say what your parent would have wanted. That is easier when your parent has talked openly about their wishes ahead of time.
The proxy has authority only for medical choices, and only while your parent cannot decide. It does not cover money; that takes a separate financial power of attorney.
